Matra Basti (Oil Enema) Instructions
When to Do Matra Basti:
-
Perform Matra Basti when you are feeling well, ideally on a night when you can rest deeply.
-
Only perform it if prescribed by a qualified practitioner—such as for pain or specific imbalances.
Do not perform Matra Basti if you:
-
Have a fever or cold
-
Are menstruating (if you are a woman)
-
Are using an oil not recommended by your practitioner
-
Have not been advised by a qualified health practitioner
Preparation
-
Evening Routine
-
Eat a light dinner.
-
After dinner, go to the bathroom to eliminate stool and urine as much as possible.
-
If you are not doing Basti immediately after dinner, place a hot water bottle on your lower abdomen to warm and relax the area.
-
-
Warm the Oil
-
Gently warm the prescribed amount of Matra Basti oil (usually 25ml, 30ml, or 60ml, as directed) until it is pleasantly warm to the touch—never hot.
-
-
Load the Syringe
-
Draw the oil into the syringe.
-
Remove any attached needle—you do not need a needle.
-
Attach the catheter (flexible tube) to the syringe nozzle.
-
-
Get Ready for Bed
-
Prepare your space for sleep. After administering Basti, you will go directly to bed and not get up again.
-
If you usually do self-foot massage (padabhyanga) or apply oil to the head (śiro-picchu) before bed, do that now.
-
Administration
-
Lubricate
-
Apply a small amount of oil to the tip of the catheter for easier insertion.
-
-
Lie in Position
-
Lie on your left side in bed.
-
Extend your left leg and bend your right leg so that your right foot rests near or on your left knee.
-
-
Insert the Tube
-
Gently insert the catheter about 8.5cm (or as comfortable) into the rectum.
-
Angle it slightly toward your head (left lateral angle).
-
You may need to adjust the angle slightly to allow smooth entry.
-
-
Inject the Oil
-
Slowly press the syringe over about 1 minute, releasing all the oil.
-
-
Prevent Leakage
-
Place a tissue, pad, or cloth inside your underwear in case of minor leakage during the night.
-
-
Wrap Up
-
Remove the hot water bottle (if using) and do not sleep with it.
-
Pull up your underpants.
-
Clean and store the syringe and catheter in a hygienic way.
Post-Basti Breath & Rest Sequence
-
Lie on your right side and take 32 breaths
-
Roll onto your back and take 64 breaths
-
Then lie on your left side and take 128 breaths
-
Sleep peacefully.
Additional Notes
-
Try to retain the oil overnight. If you feel an urge to eliminate early on, gently suppress if possible.
-
If the urge becomes strong, do not force suppression—eliminate if needed.
-
If the oil is fully absorbed and nothing is passed the next day, this is considered beneficial.
Enjoy the process. Let this be a sacred, nourishing ritual of rejuvenation.
