Jyotish Gemstones: Choosing the Right Planetary Stone for Your Chart and What to Avoid | Tiffany April Raines #154

Gemstones are often seen as beautiful objects.
In Jyotiṣa, they are something else entirely.

They are tools that interact with karma.

In this episode of the Vital Veda Podcast, Dylan Smith sits down with Vedic Gemologist and Jyotiṣī Tiffany April Raines to explore the real mechanics, risks, and potential of astrological gemstone therapy.

Tiffany is co-owner of Astrological Gem International, one of the most experienced precious gemstone companies in the world. With nearly two decades of experience, her work is grounded in precise chart-based prescriptions, rigorous quality standards, and something rare in this field: tracking real-world outcomes.

This conversation moves beyond theory.

From stories of rapid life shifts after wearing a gemstone, to the nuance of planetary amplification, to the responsibility required when working with such powerful remedies, this episode offers a grounded and mature perspective on gemstone therapy.

More importantly, it challenges the idea that gemstones are simple or universally beneficial.

They are precise.
They are powerful.
And they require awareness.

ABOUT OUR GUEST: TIFFANY APRIL RAINES

Tiffany April Raines is a Vedic Gemologist and Jyotiṣī with nearly two decades of experience working with astrological gemstones.

She is co-owner of Astrological Gem International, a company known for sourcing rare, untreated, highly flawless gemstones specifically for astrological use.

Tiffany’s work bridges classical Jyotiṣa with direct experimentation. She personally tests gemstones, tracks client outcomes over time, and continues to expand the understanding of gemstone therapy beyond traditional frameworks.

Her approach emphasises precision, responsibility, and the importance of matching the right gemstone to the right individual at the right time.

What Makes a Gemstone “Astrological”?

Not all gemstones are equal.

In Jyotiṣa, a gemstone must meet very specific criteria to be effective. The most important factors are:

  • High degree of flawlessness
  • No heat or chemical treatment
  • Strong clarity and light transmission

Inclusions, cracks or treatments can distort the way light passes through the stone, reducing or altering its effect.

This is why many commercial gemstones, often heat-treated or heavily included, may not produce noticeable results.

How Gemstones Work: Light, Colour & Planetary Resonance

Gemstones interact with light.

Each stone carries a specific spectrum of colour that resonates with the frequencies of a corresponding planet. When worn on the body, gemstones act almost like a lens or amplifier, transmitting that frequency into the system.

For example:

  • Yellow sapphire resonates with Jupiter (expansion, wisdom, abundance)
  • Blue sapphire resonates with Saturn (discipline, structure, karmic correction)

Unlike clothing or colour exposure, gemstones concentrate and direct this frequency in a more precise way.

Gemstones as Karmic Amplifiers

One of the most important insights in this episode is that gemstones do not simply “heal.”

They amplify.

Tiffany describes them as a “jet pack” for karma.

When worn, a gemstone highlights specific areas of life related to the planet and house it influences. This can accelerate growth, opportunity and alignment, but it can also bring unresolved patterns to the surface.

This is why gemstones can sometimes feel intense or uncomfortable.

They are not passive tools.
They require awareness and participation.

Should Gemstones Be a Primary Remedy?

Gemstones can be used as a primary upāya, but they are not always the most appropriate first step.

Compared to other remedies like lifestyle changes, rituals or awareness practices, gemstones tend to act more quickly and with greater intensity.

Because of this, they require:

  • Clear intention
  • Correct prescription
  • Personal responsibility

Without these, the results may feel destabilising rather than supportive.

Quality vs Size: What Actually Matters

A common misconception is that larger gemstones are more effective.

In reality, quality is far more important than size.

A small, highly flawless gemstone can be more effective than a large, included or treated stone.

Secondary stones (uparatnas), such as amethyst or citrine, are less concentrated and often need to be larger to have noticeable effect, while primary gemstones can be effective even at smaller sizes.

Phases of Wearing Gemstones

Gemstones are not always meant to be worn permanently.

Many people experience phases where they feel drawn to a particular stone, use it for a period of time, and then naturally move away from it.

This can relate to:

  • Planetary periods (dashas)
  • Life transitions
  • Completion of a particular karmic lesson

Listening to the body and intuition is an important part of working with gemstones.

Natural Pearls and Why They Are Rare

True natural pearls of astrological quality are extremely rare.

Most pearls on the market today are cultured, meaning they are artificially initiated and often contain a central nucleus that reduces their effectiveness.

Natural pearls:

  • Are formed without human intervention
  • Have stronger energetic integrity
  • Are increasingly difficult to source

Alternative options such as keshi pearls or tissue-nucleated pearls may offer a closer approximation.

Common Crystals: Amethyst and Accessibility

Amethyst is one of the most widely available stones.

While not as potent as primary gemstones, it can still offer benefits, particularly for grounding and stabilising the mind.

Unlike blue sapphire, which can be intense and unforgiving, amethyst is generally experienced as gentler and more accessible.

Working with crystals can also involve intention and awareness, allowing individuals to build sensitivity to subtle effects.

Expanding Beyond Classical Gemstone Prescriptions

Tiffany’s work includes exploring gemstones beyond traditional Jyotiṣa recommendations.

Examples discussed include:

  • Aquamarine for Aquarius ascendants
  • Tsavorite garnet as a substitute for emerald
  • Rubellite for heart-centred and solar qualities

These explorations are based on direct experience and observation, expanding the possibilities of gemstone therapy while still respecting classical foundations.

Buying Gemstones Safely

The gemstone market can be complex and inconsistent.

Important considerations include:

  • Verifying treatment status (untreated vs treated)
  • Checking for certifications from reputable labs
  • Avoiding low-cost stones that appear too good to be true
  • Working with experienced and trustworthy sources

In many cases, proper assessment requires significant training and experience.
